Don't ignore these warning signs. Early brake repairs are far cheaper than the consequences of brake failure.
Your brakes are your vehicle's most critical safety system. Modern disc brake systems are reliable and durable, but they wear gradually and give clear warning signs when attention is needed. Recognising these signs early can mean the difference between a simple pad replacement and an expensive disc replacement — or worse.
1. Squealing or Squeaking When Braking
Brake pads are manufactured with a small metal wear indicator tab. When the pad wears down to a safe minimum, this tab contacts the disc and produces a high-pitched squeal. This is intentional — it's designed to give you advance warning before the pad wears through completely. Don't ignore it.
2. Grinding Noise Under Braking
Grinding when you apply the brakes indicates the pad has worn through completely and metal is contacting metal. At this stage, you're damaging the brake disc with every stop. What would have been a pad change now requires disc replacement too — at significantly higher cost.
3. Vehicle Pulling to One Side
If your car pulls left or right when braking, it suggests uneven brake wear, a seized caliper, or contaminated pads on one side. This imbalance is both dangerous and causes accelerated wear on one side. It needs immediate attention.
4. Vibration Through the Brake Pedal
A pulsing or vibrating brake pedal usually indicates warped brake discs. Discs can warp from excessive heat — for example, driving down a long steep hill with the brakes constantly applied. Warped discs reduce braking efficiency and can cause erratic ABS activation.
5. Spongy or Soft Brake Pedal
If the brake pedal feels soft, spongy, or travels further than normal before the brakes engage, air may have entered the brake hydraulic system, or the brake fluid may be contaminated with moisture. This requires immediate attention as it directly affects braking performance.
6. Brake Warning Light On
The brake warning light can indicate low brake fluid, a hydraulic fault, or — if it's the handbrake light when the handbrake is off — a sensor fault. Any brake warning light should be investigated promptly.
7. Visible Thin Pads Through the Wheel
Many vehicles allow you to see the brake pad through the wheel spokes. If the pad material appears less than 3mm thick, book a replacement. The legal minimum is 1.6mm, but braking performance degrades noticeably before that point.
