What to Do When Your Vehicle Breaks Down

Breakdowns happen to everyone. Knowing what to do keeps you safe and gets you back on the road faster.

Breaking down is stressful, but staying calm and following the right steps keeps you safe and makes the recovery process smoother. Whether you're on a motorway hard shoulder or a rural road, the priorities are: be safe, be seen, and get help.

On a Motorway or Dual Carriageway

  • Pull onto the hard shoulder or emergency refuge area as far left as possible
  • Switch on your hazard lights immediately
  • Exit the vehicle through the passenger side (away from traffic)
  • Get behind the safety barrier or as far from the carriageway as possible
  • Call 999 if you feel unsafe, or 0300 123 5000 for Highways England on motorways
  • Do not attempt any repairs on the hard shoulder — wait for professional help

On an A-Road or Town Road

  • Pull over to a safe location — a lay-by, gateway, or side road if possible
  • Apply the handbrake and switch on hazard lights
  • Place a warning triangle at least 45 metres behind the vehicle if it's safe to do so (not on motorways)
  • Stay inside the vehicle with your seatbelt on if it's safe — you are safer inside than standing by a busy road
  • Call your breakdown provider or vehicle recovery company

Common Breakdown Causes and Quick Checks

The most common breakdown causes are flat batteries, tyre punctures, fuel running out, and mechanical failure. If the engine cuts out suddenly, check the fuel gauge first. If the car won't start, check whether any dashboard lights are visible — a dead battery typically shows no lights at all, while other faults may illuminate warning lights.
